Rando Sampler — randomizing sampler

Rando Sampler — randomizing sampler

I was watching Cuckoo’s Superbooth presentation and got a little inspired to delve into “Zoia-as-sampler.” I’m going to try to throw together a couple more patches in this vein over the weekend.

Normally, I write a bunch of things. This time, I’m going to keep it simple:

Left footswitch, momentary: record a sample. (This also adjusts the mix. Normally, the dry signal is muted, but while you’re recording a sample, you can hear yourself to monitor. When the patch is active and before it has a sample, you won’t hear anything until you begin recording.)

Middle footswitch, momentary: randomizes the sample. Changes start point, pitch, and forward/reverse. Tap it again, get a new random sample.

Right footswitch, momentary: sends the sample through a bbd delay and ghost reverb.

Audio sample (which clips in places because I wasn’t watching my levels):
0:00-2:00–Manipulating a simple synthesizer sequence.
2:05-4:30–Manipulating a drum sample.

(The silences you hear at the beginning are the time between when I engage the patch and when I begin recording.)

I might do a revision (some MIDI features would be nice for timing purposes and I might put an un-randomize option in, so you can switch back and forth), but I might not. I could also see a version where you could make a pushbutton “kit” from a few sampled, randomized loops.

Side note: If you want to make this into a glitch machine, randomize the length parameter, too.

The randomizers are super simple: a random module feeding a sample and hold, with the stompswitch triggering the S&H to hold a new value. Connect the output to wherever. Very fun.

Or (hindsight being 20/20)… you could cut out the sample and hold entirely and just select the trigger new value option on the random modules, using the stompswitch as the trigger.
