Kosmische Synth

Lush four-oscillator, two-voice synth for explorations in space.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This patch can work on all versions of the organelle, but only with some changes and caveats. For users of the organelle M/S1 running PD 0.49, everything will work except the alternate tunings. I figure most people don’t care about that anyway, so whatever. If, like me, you do want the .scl file reader, see this link for how to update to PD 0.54: https://forum.critterandguitari.com/t/update-to-organelles-version-of-pure-data/9821/21
For users of the Organelle S2: I think this should work, including the tuning functionality.
For users of the OG Organelle, just go into the FX subpatch, delete the reverb subprocess, redo the connections, and the patch should run, again minus the tuning functionality.

Overview: This was originally a really weird sounding attempt at making a cybernetic drone synth that somehow became rather conventional. Nonetheless, two of the four oscillators in each voice are a little unstable, and add some excitement to the mix.

Navigation is via the usual C&G page system; press aux key and navigate to the appropriate page via the ‘black’ keys. HOLD THE AUX KEY FOR FOUR SECONDS to go to the preset management page.

Midi CCs 30-49 are mapped to the controls on the five main pages; change the ‘midi-CCs’ subpatch to reflect your controller as needed.

Page 3:
Filter stuff. The ‘broken’ oscillators are always run through their own resonant low pass filter, since they make terrible screeching noises but sound great if that gets filtered out. The remaining controls are for the filter which is tied to the synth’s envelope generator. If the EG is off, then the filter is bypassed and these won’t do anything.

Page 4:
More filter stuff. EG controls. The shape control changes the skew of the envelope; mess around with it and you’ll hear what it does.

Page 5: Noise/FX. The ring mod can be set to a fixed modulator frequency, or set to track the Oscillator Two frequency (including the detune amount); this can make for a pleasant tremolo-like effect.

Acknowledgments:
This patch came out of an attempt to make a less ‘predictable’ synth voice using ideas from musicians inspired by cybernetics, or the theory of closed systems. Both paired oscillators were inspired by the circuit diagram and discussion in this blog post by Nathan Ho: https://nathan.ho.name/posts/cybernetic-synthesis/
I’m not schooled in any of this, or particularly competent at all, so the code I put together in Gen probably bears little resemblance in the end. I was pleased with the result in any case.

All sounds in the example below provided by the patch run through my H9 pedal for various stereo effects.
