Feldmanesque

This patch is an homage to an aesthetics of sound heard in certain instrumental and electronic works composed in the 1950s and early 1960s. I’m especially fascinated by the music of Morton Feldman, so I’ve employed some (superficial?) characteristic aspects of his music – low dynamics, sparse sounds, silence, unconventional instrumentation – to create an infinitely self-generative patch (extremely long performance duration is a characteristic of later Feldman works).

Incidentally, Feldman wrote very little music for tape or electronic instruments. He also avoided the traps of overly strict 12-tone and serial techniques, preferring instead to work with the concept of the “total chromatic” espoused by his teacher Stefan Wolpe. This patch attempts to recreate that unsystematic harmony by the use of Jeremy Wentworth’s Quantizer set to Chromatic (Feldman was also relatively uninterested in microtuning or any intonation other than equal temperament).

Please feel free to improve this patch. I consider it an etude and I look forward to any additions and/or extensions other users might add.
