As far as I know, the effect was obtained by using a square wave (a simple 555 oscillator) to modulate a preamplified microphone signal (probably using a 741 op amp) through a ring modulator (probably a passive one which used a small transformer and 4 diodes).
I will play with that next and see how it goes i watched the video from Nicholas Briggs on the Doctor Who Channel and the way he had his ring mod was Square as well and instead of VCO it was LFO cause he used a Moog moogerfooger which was an expensive ringmod that i was like i will go with VCV instead
You might want to try the different free ring modulator modules (no pun intended) available in VCV Rack.
