EQSSM – Elemental Quad Sampler Spectral Madness. I guess I could have crammed PdArray somewhere into the title too.
The QuadSimpler sampler module loops four soundfiles simultaneously. Two channels/files are routed to the Smoke (aka Clouds) texture synthesizer in its Spectral Madness mode, the remaining two channels/files are routed to the Elements modal synthesizer in its normal operating mode. Smoke is carefully tuned for its sound, with modulation input for only two of its parameters. Elements is here used primarily as an audio processor with modulation points for five resonator parameters, including a constant full sweep of its FM control.
Two of the three PdArray modules are dedicated to modulating the speed controls of the sampler channels. The modulation is stepped, so the effect often changes suddenly for a rapidly shifting texture with seemingly random pitch modulation and bidirectional playback.
The remaining array module is dedicated to the bowed instrument model of the Braids macro oscillator. The array provides the melody line and triggers for the oscillator, but only after passing through an attenuverter and a quantizer. Incidentally, this instrument’s array cursor position is determined by an LFO sine wave that creates a nicely fluctuating performance tempo.
The four samples can be replaced by any other samples of similar length (or not). The user can determine what sounds he or she prefers against the Braids bowed instrument obbligato. Please see the Notes module text for more information regarding performance details.
Regarding the mix: Four channels are subject to random changes of level with continuous motion (no sudden jumps). The level of the single channel for the bowed instrument is controlled manually, ditto for the freeze control of Smoke/Clouds and for the clock status of the random gates module.
