As a self-challenge I put together an 84hp rack using only basic, free VCV modules. The idea was to try to compose a generative, multi-instrumental patch with some listenability under strict conditions.
Other restrictions:
– can only use each module once
– no outside data (samples, wavetables, inbound MIDI, etc.)
The patch that might not be great musically, but I find fun to listen to and it has a remarkable amount of sound to it. Some notable things about the module usage and routing:
* Random module is used as a sequencer
* a rudimentary kick drum can be formed by linking the LFO module with the VCF (and you don’t need to use the audio input or drive of the VCF, freeing those up for some other use).
* white noise is chopped up to evoke a snare and/or cymbals
* Random, 1 to 4, and 4 to 1 are used as timing sources/dividers. A maxed 8Vert output with no input used as a 10v voltage source and run through the 1 to 4 to implement timed gates.
* I’m happy with the bass sound from a sine wave coming out of the VCO at 55hz, with V/Oct modulation coming from the Random’s “smooth” output.
* I switched the WT VCO’s wavetable to 2048 wave points for more varied sound.
