Virtual Shruti Box Drone Synth
This one was inspired by a live show I was a part of. One of the opening acts’ musicians played an instrument unfamiliar to me: a shruti box! I loved the sound and had ideas of how I could use one in my practice, and it dawned on me that the ZOIA could be set up to be one!
There are four “reeds” to use as drones, each one toggle-able and tuneable to any note (and I mean ANY, there are fine adjustments!). The left foot switch engages the automatic drone, the middle toggles between male-female registers (octaves), and the right toggles a reverb for the instrument pass-through. If you want to get more of the authentic shruti experience, plug in a sustain pedal to the control/expression port and manually pump the virtual bellows!
