sequence_with_random

Here’s a little example patch for Ricardo Arribas.

This patch has two sequences, and with a controlled probability, one is added to the other. The top row of Seq3 sets the main sequence. The middle row sets the probability of adding to it, and the bottom row is the second sequence may be added. The mixer combines the two signals.

There are some fine points. The sample and hold (kinks/utilties) after the mixer makes sure the pitch only changes on the beat. In order to get it to work properly, you need a tiny delay, which is why the Bacon Music SampDelay was necessary. (Basically, the mixer’s output signal is delayed about ~1 sample compared to its inputs, and we want to capture the signal after the randomness is decided and not before.)

The two plaits at the top are a kick and hi-hat. At the end of the video I add LFO’s to the plaits, which add livelieness to the sound. Plateau is also there just to make the sound prettier.

The second picture shows a variation on the patch: instead of adding a fixed voltage, you can add a random voltage. By sending the third row to the CV input on the VCA, you control the size of random voltage that gets added.

Finally, Entropia from Geodesics does exactly what this patch does: either adding two fixed sequences or adding a random quantity to fixed quantity. (And it can do more than that…)
