Scale Illusion

Deutsch’s Scale Illusion realized in VCV Rack.

The Scale Illusion was discovered by Deutsch in 1973, first reported at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (1974) and first published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (1975)

Click “Reset” then “Run” on CLKD. Clicking “Reset” ensures that the oscillators are in sync.

This version recreates the Scale Illusion in the fashion of the original illusion. That is, the Rack uses two 8-step sequencers to drive the pitch of two sine wave oscillators (without gate).

Mute the left or right channels on the MIX4.

This v2 Rack includes amplitude envelopes to provide rise and fall times. While this deviates from the original stimulus, the sound is more musical.

Many thanks to Marc Boulé for pointing out the “full gate” feature of the Phrase-Seq-16. Adding a full gate on the 8th note is what allows it to be “tied” from the end to the beginning of the loop.
