An attempt to recreate the 1978 “Powertran Transendent 2000” DIY monophonic synth (used by Joy Division, Thomas Dolby, etc.). It’s not an exact copy, but it certainly sounds like an inexpensive 70’s synth. This patch is set up to be used by an external keyboard. For playing the synth, I would zoom in on only the lower row and hide the cables.
The top row contains the actual signal path with a VCO, a VCF, ADSRs, effects, etc.
The bottom row tries to emulate the controls of the original Transcendent 2000.
The control areas from left to right are:
Portamento
Buttons: top button switches the sample and hold function on and off. Second button changes VCF from Low Pass to Band Pass.
VCO section: Has Pulse Width on top. Bottom knob changes the VCO from a Triangle wave (all the way to the left) to a saw, then square and then sine wave (all the way to the right). NOTE: The original synth didn’t have a sine wave on it.
Pitch LFO: Top is LFO Pitch Volume, bottom is LFO speed.
Noise/ sample and Hold section: Top controls the white noise volume. Bottom controls LFO speed for sample and hold.
Filter section: Filter sweep volume, filter sweep speed, frequency and resonance/Q.
Filter envelope section: Filter attack and filter release.
Amp envelope: the usual ADSR setup.
FX section: Delay volume, delay time, delay feedback and reverb volume. NOTE: the original synth didn’t have any effects.
Volume section: Top knob is the volume level for synth (no mixer setup).
Another classic! I think Martin Ware from Human League [1st 2 albums-Travelogue and Reproduction] and Heaven 17 built one of these as well, so it has a good heritage in shaping British Electronic music!
Now I have got my Akai LPK25 working gonna give it a good go!
