Max’s Pattern Suite

Modified versions of the factory 201 pattern modes Pink Mode, Octave Cascade, Octave Arp, and Double Randoms which allow greater flexibility when externally clocking the 201. They are inspired by the clock sync functionality of the original Pocket Piano MIDI and Septavox.

If the 201 is receiving midi clock, then these modes will change their rates to different subdivisions of the beat based on the position of the tempo knob. Selectable subdivisions are 8th (knob fully left), 8th triplet, 16th, and 32nd (knob fully right). This allows you to change the rate of the notes without adjusting the overall tempo, which is especially handy for recording interesting and dynamic sequences.

If the 201 is not receiving midi clock, then these patterns behave identically to the stock versions. This means that they play 16th notes (four notes per metronome click).

I like how the behavior stays identical to the stock patterns when no MIDI clock is detected—that’s a very thoughtful design choice. The subdivision switching via the tempo knob feels intuitive and performance-friendly. In a way, it’s similar to Escape Road: the core mechanics stay the same, but subtle adjustments in timing and control open up many different outcomes and creative paths.
