Labyrinth-O

# Labyrinth-o — Get Started Guide

Labyrinth-o is a dual probabilistic step sequencer for the Organelle, inspired by the Moog Labyrinth. Unlike most Organelle patches, it is not built in Pure Data — it’s a native C++ program running directly on the hardware, communicating with the Organelle’s controls via ALSA MIDI and OSC. It runs two independent 8-step sequences simultaneously, each outputting MIDI notes. Gates and pitches are generated and mutated in real time using bit-manipulation techniques, giving you evolving, never-quite-repeating patterns.

## Basic Controls

**AUX button** is your main transport and navigation key:
– **Short press** — cycle through the 5 pages
– **Long press** — start / stop the sequencer

The current page is shown on the OLED display.

—

## Starting the Sequencer

There are two ways to start Labyrinth:

**Internal clock** — long-press AUX to start/stop. BPM is set on Page 2.

**External MIDI clock** — plug a MIDI clock source into the TRS jack and Labyrinth will sync automatically. No setup needed — as soon as a clock signal is received, the sequencer locks to it and starts running.

## The 5 Pages

**Page 1 — PERFORM**
The main performance view. Knobs control global corruption (K4) and per-sequencer parameters. This is where you’ll spend most of your time. Knob 4 allows you to play with Corrupt and randomize the sequences with a %.

**Page 2 — SEQ EDIT**
Per-sequencer corruption, clock division, and CV range. Each sequencer can run at a different rate (x4, x2, /1, /2, /3, /4, /6, /8), making polymetric patterns easy to set up.

**Page 3 — SCALE**
Set the root note and scale for each sequencer independently. The header shows the current KB Mode (BitFlip or Transpose).

**Page 4 — MIDI / SYNC**
Configure MIDI channels and note length. External MIDI clock sync is always active via the TRS jack.

**Page 5 — SETTINGS**
Velocity mode, note length, and KB mode.

## Playing the Keyboard

The keyboard has two modes, selectable on Page 5 with K3:

**BitFlip mode (default)**
Keys 1–12 toggle gates and randomize pitches for SEQ1. Keys 13–24 do the same for SEQ2. Additional keys on each side handle bit-shift, length decrease, and buffer save/recall — great for live mangling.

**Transpose mode**
The keyboard becomes a real-time transpose controller. Keys 1–12 set a semitone offset for SEQ1 (centred on key 7 = no transpose). Keys 13–24 do the same for SEQ2. Use this to play the sequences melodically while they evolve on their own.

## Getting a Sound Going

1. Load the patch and connect MIDI out to your synth or DAW
2. Long-press AUX to start (or send a MIDI start from your clock source)
3. You’ll hear a random 8-step pattern immediately
4. Use the keys to flip gates and mutate pitches in real time
5. Head to Page 2 to set different clock divisions on each sequencer for polymetric grooves
6. Use Page 3 to lock both sequences to the same scale so they stay harmonic

## Tips

– Running SEQ1 at `/3` and SEQ2 at `/2` gives a classic 3-against-2 polyrhythm that evolves as pitches mutate.
– In Transpose mode, tapping different keys while the sequencer runs lets you phrase the sequence in real time.
– The chain mode (key 23 in BitFlip mode) links the two sequences end-to-end for a 16-step pattern.
– When synced to external MIDI clock, clock divisions and multipliers are all sample-accurate — x4 on a slow tempo is a great way to get fast arpeggios locked to the grid.
