Just and Equal Tuning Example

If your interested in this sort of thing, then here’s
a quick patch showing the difference between Just Intonation and Equal Temperament tuning.
Starting off, I’ll make a huge generalization: “Just Intonation” sounds more musical and better to the ears, but western music is normally written in “equal temperament” (I know, there are lots of exceptions to this rule. Plus, all other non-western music).

Why does it matter? Well, if you are only using one series of notes (let’s say the A minor scale) and you don’t change keys, then “Just Intonation” will sound a little better. If you’re changing keys, then stick to the normal “Equal Temperament” tuning.

the top row sine wave is sent through NYSTHI’s Poly Scala Quantizer. If you right click on the module you’ll will see a bunch of alternate tunings. I’m using one of the built in just tunings (the Well tempered Young) but you can import other scala files if you want.
The second row has a sine wave with the normal “equal temperament” tuning.
The mixer has the channels labeled as JUST and EQUAL. you can mute and unmute and hear the difference. It may be hard to hear any difference. If you have both channels on at the same time you’ll hear how they wander slightly out of tune with each other.
