Guitar Oscillator Sync v2.0

Oscillator sync, sometimes called ‘cross modulation’ is an old modular technique which is found on some synthesisers. It’s basically synchronising the phase of an oscillator’s waveform to an incoming signal. This forces the base frequency of the sync’d oscillator (sometimes called the slave) to the pitch of the master oscillator. In this case, the ‘master oscillator’ is the audio signal from the guitar, creating a kind of noisy guitar synth sound. Changing the frequency of the sync’d oscillator affects the harmonic content, and this is mapped to an envelope follower meaning I can dynamically control the classic ‘sync sweep’ sound from the guitar’s volume. There are quite a few VCOs in VCV Rack that feature a sync input, so I’ve layered a few and patched them into a looper to make something to improvise over. I’ve also sent the VCOs to a few randomly modulated filters, and I’m bringing these in occasionally using a MIDI controller.

NOTE – In the video, I’m using a few VST plugins which I’ve taken out in the upload version, just so it’s entrirely using free modules. You may need some kind of amp sim to boost the guitar to the right level.

You will need the following free module collections:

HetrickCV
Nysthi
Bogaudio
Vult (free)
Mindmeld
Squinky Labs
Sonus Modular
Mockba Modular
Alright Devices
Surge for Rack
Hora
Valley
