Figments

The inspiration for this piece was listening to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Studie II (1954). Unlike Studie II, this sketch is stochastic in nature.

In this sketch, there are three similar voices. Each voice consists of events that are timed stochastically. Each event is a cluster of five sine tones articulated with an envelope that either increases or decreases for some random duration. For each event, the frequencies of the five tones are chosen at random and a random degree of glissando is introduced.

Two additional voices provide variety. I reprise the Polyphonic Wind Rattles from Winter Fog II and there is a meandering melodic line which is a simple arpeggiation of the pitch-class set 6-32.

The overall event arrival rate is slow, which creates a sparse, ethereal ambience.
