Enter the μMatrix – Generative Patch in VCV Rack driven by ASCII characters

Following Alphagem-o (https://patchstorage.com/anuli-%c2%b5matrix/#), I thought I’d try making a few µMatrix patches too

In this video I’m experimenting with the µMatrix module by DocB in VCV Rack, using it to generate evolving melodies. I put together three different patches:

– Slow, ambient-style sequences

– Faster, more rhythmic patterns

– Generative melodies driven by LFOs and random sources

The µMatrix is inspired by C42’s TheMatrix — it provides a 32×32 grid where playheads move across ASCII characters to generate pitch and gate information. With clever modulation and randomness, it can create endless evolving patterns for ambient, downtempo, or experimental patches.

👉 You can check out the official manual here: https://github.com/docb/dbRackSequencer?tab=readme-ov-file#%C2%B5matrix

Main idea behind it:
MuMatrix is a grid-based module that uses ASCII characters to generate pitch and gate signals. You place “playheads” on the grid, and as they move, each cell’s character is converted into CV and gate outputs. Combined with modulators like LFOs, random generators, and triggers, it allows you to create evolving, generative melodies — from slow ambient textures to faster, sequenced patterns.

Essentially, it’s a creative, programmable melody engine where the grid + characters = musical output

Thank you, beautiful patch and sounds! 🌟

Clever patching. I’d like to try a different oscillator in this patch. Maybe a host plugin to replace the oscillator.
