In this video, I attempt to recreate a DX7-style electric jazz piano using VCV Rack and classic FM synthesis techniques. Inspired by the iconic sounds of the Yamaha DX7 — especially the warm, glassy tones heard in 80s jazz and R&B — this patch uses TZ-OP oscillators and NYSTHI DX7 Envelopes to emulate that dynamic FM character.
🎹 Features:
FM synthesis using TZ-OP (through-zero FM oscillator)
Velocity-sensitive envelopes using NYSTHI DX7 Envelope
Classic 2-operator structure (modulator → carrier)
Jazzy, plucky tone with evolving harmonic content
Optional effects like reverb for added space
This is a work-in-progress exploration — not a 1:1 DX7 emulation, but an expressive, modular approach to FM piano sound design.
