Chaotic Alien Jungle

Up until now, all of my patches derived from my Subharmonicon emulator (https://patchstorage.com/subharmonicon-emulator-v5-for-rack-2/) have been musical. So I decided to try something different and see what kind of nonsense I could create with lots of feedback loops in the patch bay.

I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled on some constrained chaos. And even more surprised when I discovered that I could disable the sequencer, and hold the envelopes wide open, and the sounds would still chaotically fade in and out, with varying pitches. The patch remains interesting with the feedback in complete control.

The “lead” squealing/whining tones are a mixture of Sub 2A and filter self oscillation. The rest of the VCO output is mostly just random noise and CV.

I have no idea which cables are critical to the sound, and which can be removed. But The choice of waveform, use of unison, and octave selection are all critical to achieving the sound. Stray much from the current setup, and the sound quickly becomes much harsher and/or static. I think most of the chaos is triggered by detuned unison pairs moving in and out of phase with each other.

Almost everything is just “stock” emulator. The only addition is atmospheric delay/reverb from Valhalla SuperMassive VST plugin in the VCV Host-FX module, with the “Vger” preset.

I was not able to record the patch with the VCV recorder – CPU usage would ramp up uncontrollably, and the patch would freeze and/or crash. I’ve never had that with other patches.

I recorded the sound with Reaper, and the video with Logitech Capture.

Here is the patch bay routing:
VCO 1 audio out -> Sub 2B divisor selection
VCO 2 audio out -> VCF Cutoff (-), Resonance (+), and Drive (+)
Sub 1A audio out -> VCO 1 V/Oct in
Sub 1B audio out -> Sub 2A FM
Sub 2B audio out -> VCO 2 V/Oct in
Constant 0V -> Sub 2B FM (to break the normaled FM from Sub 2A)

I also posted a performance that adds flutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NAr3swOC_c
