Auto Swell plus Generative Synth and Shimmer

This is a fairly simple patch, but really satisfying to play. It’s all driven by the Hora envelope follower, which triggers a slow ADSR to fade the guitar sound in via a pair of VCA’s. You can do this with a volume pedal or simply use the volume knob on the guitar, but making it automatic makes a perfect swell every time. The gate output from the envelope follower is also patched into the trigger inputs on the sample and hold sections of Audible Instruments Utilities, which is used to generate random pitch information each time the guitar is played. This produces two synth notes, one going to a pair of Vult Basal modules, with a slight detune for stereo and delayed vibrato from an LFO, and the other going to both the Squinky Labs Saws and ES Cloud Generator for a wide sawtooth pad, with some chorus and filtering too (both running through a quantizer set to D Dorian, one of my favourite modes for guitar noodling).

There is also a ‘shimmer’ effect, which is basically reverb with a pitchshifter in a feedback loop. Clouds is pitched up two octaves and the output is fed back into Plateau via a mixer.
As usual I’ve added a looper which records the guitar and pad sounds via a mixer, this makes a nice backdrop to improvise over.

Note: I’ve used a few VST effects in the video – Supermassive for extra reverb, Wampler univibe and an amp simulator for guitar tone. The shared version of the patch uses entirely free modules, as not everyone has Host FX and the same plugins.

You will need the following free module collections in VCV:

E-Series
Vult (free)
Nysthi
Bogaudio
Sonus
Audible Instruments
JW Modules
Hora
Valley
Squinky Labs
MindMeld
