SQ-1XT

This is a MIDI rack designed to extend the functionality of the Korg SQ-1 sequencer or any other step sequencer that can send sequences on two different channels.

It works by converting MIDI notes to CV from lanes A and B and then adding, subtracting, or comparing the two values to produce new notes, as demonstrated by Mike Olson https://youtu.be/JYTCQ1zrtvc. The steps in the resulting sequence will be the LCM of A and B. See the table in the patch info for the precise number of steps.

Although the pitches are quite unpredictable, the resulting sequences preserve intervallic relations that make them quite musical. The various operations produce different but related sequences.

The patch can also be used to modulate sequences in the SQ-1 by using a single step in the B lane and changing its pitch.

Olson shows a trick when using sequences with even steps, where you can get an additional sequence depending on whether the second sequence starts on an even or an odd step. This can be combined with the technique above for even more variations.

Another trick: set all the steps in B at the same pitch except for one. (Semi)Randomized interval jumps!

One more: automate the switch that controls the type of operation performed between the two lanes to get even more variations.

The patch comes as a project including a rudimentary Drambo version of the SQ-1 for demonstration purposes. No extras required.

Installation: load the SQ-1XT MIDI rack onto a track set to MIDI OMNI and point two sequences in channels 1 and 2, then point the patch to your synth of choice and set it to receive on channel 1.

Thanks for trying it out!

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing! Look forward to digging into it to learn more about the math functions…have not explored those too much in Drambo.

I’ve recently been working with the Korg SQ-64 sending multiple sequences to a monosynth, getting some interesting variations as 2 or 3 different patterns overlap…also with modulation sent to the synth filter and envelope on some steps. Going to try running these sequences into your Drambo patch. Should be fun!
