6 small pure data patches

a collection of 6 small pure data patches i wrote in 2023, with one older patch from 2020. these were originally written in under an hour so certain techniques were used to throw together a patch quickly without relying on previous abstractions. lots of expr~ sound design and patterns.

patch descriptions:::

# house of plonk
small plonky beat, with some adjustments to the delay that differs a bit from the original. note the expr objects used for sequencing and phase modulation synthesis. i found it to be a useful technique to get short repeating sequences done quickly. the expr allows using the counter float to send a bang when it is divisible by 3 for instance. makes polyrhythms easy.

# fabrication matrix
something more atmospheric and complex. theme was to create a “mysterious soundscape”. i enjoy the wind effect – phase modulated sine with noise bandpassed into a delay. the low rumble fades in and out filling out more of the frequency spectrum and the bleeps do their thing.

# geometric sentry
the theme this time was to make extensive use of “random events”, i think this patch sounds fairly consistent on each play so maybe didn’t quite achieve that. this one is my favourite, it’s the most “idm” like. double kicks were a fun idea and more expr~ sound design.

# harmonic lounge
theme this time around was “chill” music, this patch delivered there. i attempted to do additive sine sounds similar to dream_iteration, but it didn’t quite work out well. i spent a long time messing with it and so the rest of the patch suffered somewhat. i quite enjoy the lo-fi snare.

# field of ten
this patch was part of a challenge to make the most interesting patch only using 10 objects but as many message or number boxes as you wanted. this patch follows a “contained randomness” philosophy. one random number from 1 to 16 into a sel object, and some numbers represent some note or delay time or clock speed. it’s a bit primitive but i chose complexity over sound design. note the lack of mtof to save on object count.

# yttrium research
an old patch (made in 2020) as part of a challenge to fit a “musicbox” style patch into a small square of space. i spent some time cleaning it up to make it look nicer on video. it’s an old patch and so doesn’t really have the cool sound design tricks as some of the others have. an expr object with some bitwise operations does the whole melody and bass notes. the snare is about as primitive as it gets.
