Carousel - rotary speaker for the Organelle
===========================================
by gur_shulman - v1.1.1

A rotary speaker cabinet for anything you plug into the Organelle's input:
organ, keys, guitar, voice. A rotating horn and a rotating bass drum, each
with its own speed and its own weight, so they speed up and slow down
separately like the real thing. Two virtual mics catch real Doppler pitch
movement, the horn's beam swinging past, cabinet reflections and a bit of
room. Tube preamp drive included.

CONTROLS
ENCODER turn = page, press = Organelle menu
AUX tap = SLOW / FAST (see CONTROL page)
FOOTSWITCH tap = SLOW / FAST
MOD WHEEL half moon: up = FAST, down = SLOW
EXP PEDAL volume (once you move it)
AUX + press reset every setting to the default
LED follows the horn: green on one half of its turn, yellow
on the other (the same at every speed)

PAGES (turn the encoder; the boxes at the top show where you are)
ROTOR SPEED | DRIVE | BALANCE | MIX
CABINET CABINET | DIST | ROOM | BODY
STEREO OUTPUT | WIDTH | ANGLE | LO MONO
SPEEDS HORN LO | HORN HI | DRUM LO | DRUM HI
RAMP HORN UP | HORN DN | DRUM UP | DRUM DN
  STOP HORN | DRUM
TONE BASS | TREBLE | XOVER
PREAMP GAIN | BIAS | LEVEL
MOTOR WOBBLE | DOPPLER | HORN AM | DRUM AM
CONTROL AUX | FOOTSW | WHEEL | EXP
SETUP KNOBS | INPUT | LED

Numbers show as a bar, choices as a row of segments (the chosen one is
solid). Knobs CATCH by default: after a page change a small notch shows
where the knob is, turn it to the value and it takes over - nothing jumps.
KNOBS = JUMP on the SETUP page if you prefer.

WHAT IT ALL DOES
SPEED SLOW (chorale) / FAST (tremolo) / STOP (the "brake": the
rotors slow down and park at their STOP angle)
DRIVE tube preamp drive, from clean to growl
BALANCE drum (left) <-> horn (right), 0 = like the cabinet
MIX 100% = only the cabinet (normal). Lower = dry signal mixed in
CABINET 122 CLASSIC the organ sound
              147 HI-FI a bit cleaner and brighter
145 SMALL smaller, boxier, more swirl
3300 SOLID solid state amp, harder drive
16 VIBRATONE full range rotor, no horn (guitar)
ANGLE angle between the two mics: 0 = both in one spot, 180 = on
opposite sides (the movement swaps fully left / right)
DIST mic distance: close = strong movement, far = smoother,
              more cabinet
ROOM a small room around the cabinet
SPEEDS HORN LO / HI, DRUM LO / HI in rpm. Defaults are the classic
              122: horn 48 / 400 rpm, drum 40 / 342 rpm
RAMP how long each rotor takes to speed up / slow down. The horn
is light (about 1 s), the drum is heavy (about 5 s) - this is
the famous "wind up" (UP = speeding up, DN = slowing down)
STOP HORN / DRUM: where each rotor parks when it stops, -90 ...
+90 deg, 0 = facing front, between the mics (default). Turn
it while stopped and the rotor moves there. All the way down
= OFF: it coasts and stops wherever it ends up
XOVER crossover: where the sound splits between drum and horn
(800 Hz on the real one)
  BODY the cabinet's wooden resonance
BIAS tube asymmetry: more = more even harmonics, rounder grit
  AUX / FOOTSW
TOGGLE tap = slow <-> fast
HOLD FAST fast only while held
BRAKE tap = stop <-> go
WHEEL HALF MOON (up = fast) / SPEED (continuous rotor speed, from
slow to fast) / DRIVE / BALANCE
EXP VOLUME (organ swell) / DRIVE / SPEED / BALANCE
WOBBLE the belts and motor are not perfect: tiny speed changes
DOPPLER amount of pitch movement (100% = real)
HORN AM how much the horn's level moves (100% = real)
DRUM AM how much the drum's level moves
OUTPUT STEREO, or MONO: one mic, the same on both jacks - the
classic single-mic sound with the full swirl and no phasing
(use it when you play into one amp or one channel)
WIDTH stereo only: how far the sound really moves between left
and right. 0% = mono, 100% = the two mics as they are,
200% = extra wide. ANGLE changes the movement itself
LO MONO keeps the low end in the middle: below 100 / 200 / 400 Hz
the sound is mono, above it still moves (great on a PA)
GAIN preamp input gain, -12 ... +12 dB
LEVEL output level after the cabinet, -12 ... +12 dB
INPUT STEREO SUM (both jacks) or LEFT ONLY (a mono source in
              the left jack)
LED ROTOR = follows the horn, OFF

SETTINGS
Everything is saved by itself to carousel_settings.txt in this folder two
seconds after the last change and comes back next time. Organelle
"Save Patch" / "Duplicate Patch" also keeps it, so you can make a few
versions of the patch. Delete the file (or AUX + press) for the defaults.

TIPS
Gospel organ: 122 CLASSIC, DRIVE 40%, tap FAST at the end of a phrase
  and let it wind up.
  Guitar: 16 VIBRATONE, ANGLE 120, MIX 80%.
Slow pad swirl: SPEED SLOW, HORN LO 60 rpm, ROOM 40%.
Turn WHEEL to SPEED and ride the rotors by hand.

TECHNICAL
Pure Data vanilla, no externals. Tube preamp, 24 dB crossover, horn and
drum each written into a delay line and read by two mics through
Doppler-modulated taps with directivity, plus cabinet reflections, body
resonances, shelving EQ and a small room.
